Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) is an evidence-supported filial therapy model grounded in the principles of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT). Research suggests that CPRT strengthens parent-child relationships, reduces behavioral concerns, and extends therapeutic benefits beyond the playroom by equipping parents with therapeutic play skills.

This introductory training is designed for play therapists seeking practical ways to incorporate CPRT concepts into their current practice. Participants will gain exposure to the CPRT model, learn how to introduce CPRT skills during parent consultations and family sessions, identify appropriate populations for CPRT-informed interventions, and explore pathways toward formal CPRT training and certification.

This training on play therapy is meant to give therapists new tools and expand their repertoire of techniques for moving therapy forward. These classes are built on sound therapeutic theory and will focus on the application of specific tools through demonstration and interaction.

This training is not a certification course and does not qualify participants to become CPRT trainers or facilitators. Rather, it serves as an introduction to CPRT principles and practical integration strategies for play therapy practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this training, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe at least three research-supported benefits of integrating CPRT principles into Child-Centered PlayTherapy.

  • Identify populations and clinical presentations that may benefit from CPRT-informed interventions and recognize situations in which CPRT may not be clinically appropriate.
  • Demonstrate at least three CPRT skills that can be incorporated into parent consultations, caregiver involvement, and ongoing play therapy treatment.
